Painting Techniques
Armour
After airbrushing the base colors I then applied an oil wash of Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyd Raw Umber and Sansodor over a lot of the armour, then used pure Sansodor to push the oil more into the recesses and clean the flatter plates. I think at this point I should have applied a black oil wash into the recesses of the armour as well to increase the contrast, but I cover that next with acrylic instead.
I applied the black to the recesses, as well as a mix of black and Russ Grey to areas of the armour facing towards the ground or that would be in shadow. I then used Russ Grey, Fenrisian Grey and Blue Horror to edge highlight all of the armour.
I then used Gory Red and Scarlet Blood through the airbrush to create the glow effect from the axe. Where I lost the edge highlights I mixed Blue Horror with Scarlet Blood and painted them back on.
To create scratches I first painted a thin straight line in one stroke using Blue Horror, applying less pressure at the end to create a sharper point showing the direction of travel. I then painted an equally thin line above the first, slightly overlapping it. The original line acts as the highlight to the brown scratch.
To weather the armour, when painting a rusted divet I painted the full shape with Blue Horror, then filled it with Rhinox Hide leaving as thin a border as possible around the edge to create the illusion of depth. When just painting rust I instead started with Rhinox Hide. Both then follow the same steps.
Doombull Brown was used to fill two thirds of the Rhinox Hide, then Mournfang Brown to fill half the Doombull Brown. In areas where I wanted to add a streak I then used Seraphim Sepia to create a straight line coming down from the bottom of the chip. I then applied Jokaero Orange to the bottom of the chip and halfway down the streak.
For brighter areas of rust I added small dots of Fire Dragon Bright and Phalanx Yellow within the orange area. In some cases I used a wash of Jokaero Orange to create a more faded look.
Axe Blade
I airbrushed the center of the axe with White Scar, leaving the edges darker. I then applied Fluorescent Orange over the whole blade, followed by a mix of Fluorescent Orange & Magenta focused around the blade edges. I then used Fluorescent Red on the very edges to further darken the coolest points of the blade.
I was to redo the blade I would have followed the same steps, but would have used a yellow between the white and orange, and would have gone to a darker red on the edges to create more contrast.
With the airbrushing done I went on to add some further contrast. Mostly focusing on the center wolves and edge of the blade, I used Scarlet Blood, Gory Red and Burnt Red to further darken the areas that would be cooler than the center of the axe. I then applied small patches of Black at the very edges to create a burnt lava effect.
Focusing on the center of the axe, in the eyes and mouths of the wolves, as well as the cracks in the blade, I thinned down the White to get it into the recesses, then went over with the Fluorescent Yellow to create a bright glow. I left some spots of white to create the illusion of the brightest areas, I applied Ice Yellow, Sun Yellow and Moon Yellow in patches to a variation to the glow effect.
Gold
I used Ratling Grime as a recess shade. As it's not a wash but a contrast paint, I had to be careful when applying it, but it's easy to go back over mistakes with Retributor Armour.
Skin
I don't have Pastel Blue but Russ Grey seems to be equivalent.
Hair
I don't have Neutral Grey but The Fang seems to be equivalent. I don't have Pastel Blue but Russ Grey seems to be equivalent.
Block in The Fang to block in the highlights. Then mix The Fang and Rhinox Hide to fill in the shadows. Then mix The Fang and Russ Grey to create a brighter highlight over the initial highlights. Mix the above with White Scar for brighter highlights, then pure White Scar for the final highlight.
